Stainless Steel Grade Composition Chart. A useful chart of relevant information on Austenitic, Ferritic, Duplex, Martensitic, and Precipitation Hardening grades of stainless steels including: Chemical analysis; Mechanical properties; ASTM standard and product use; Properties and typical applications; Stainless Steel Grade Composition Chart << Previous Page
ASTM's steel standards are instrumental in classifying, evaluating, and specifying the material, chemical, mechanical, and metallurgical properties of the different types of steels, which are primarily used in the production of mechanical components, industrial parts, and construction elements, as well as other accessories related to them.
Grade 301 is a high work-hardening rate austenitic stainless steel. It can be supplied with a tensile strength of up to over 1300 MPa in strip and wire forms, to produce tempers in the range of 1/16 Hard to Full Hard.
There are more than 60 grades of stainless steel. However, the entire group can be divided into five classes. Each is identified by the alloying elements which affect their microstructure and for which each is named.
303 stainless steel. The 303 stainless steel can be machined more easily than 304 stainless steel by adding a small amount of sulfur and phosphorus. 304 stainless steel. It belongs to the general model, which is 18/8 stainless steel. GB grade is 0Cr18Ni9. 309 stainless steel. It has better temperature resistance than 304 stainless steel. 316 stainless steel
Type 304the most common grade; the classic 18/8 (18% chromium, 8% nickel) stainless steel. Outside of the US it is commonly known as "A2 stainless steel", in accordance with ISO 3506 (not to be confused with A2 tool steel). The Japanese equivalent grade of this material is SUS304.
An air-hardened "semi-stainless" steel, D2 has a relatively high chromium content (12 percent), which makes it more stain-resistant than other carbon steels. It has shown excellent wear resistance and edge retention and is tougher than most stainless steels, such as ATS-34, although less so than other non-stainless grades.
Steel grades to classify various steels by their composition and physical properties have been developed by a number of standards organizations. For alloys in general (including steel), unified numbering system (UNS) of ASTM International and the Society of Automotive Engineers (SAE).
