Mechanical Properties Type 301 is an austenitic stainless steel with a nominal composition of 17 percent chromium and 7 percent nickel, which provides good strength and ductility when cold worked. It also has excellent corrosion resistance properties. 301 is well suited to welding and forming and drawing.
301 stainless steel is an austenitic grade that can be supplied in various hardness and strengths. It also has variants with low carbon and high nitrogen. Applications include railway car structural components, airframes, stove elements and toaster springs.
Grade 301 is a cheaper alternative to the traditional high-nickel austenitic stainless steels such as grade 304. Grade 301L stainless steel is a low carbon steel which is ideal for improved ductility and when heavy sections are to be welded. Unlike welds in grade 301, grade 301L does not need to be annealed for maximum corrosion resistance.
